Olopatadine hydrochloride is an antihistamine and mast cell stabilizer, sold as a prescription eye drop (0.2% solution, trademark Pataday (or Patanol S in some countries), manufactured by Alcon). It is used to treat itching associated with allergic conjunctivitis (eye allergies). Olopatadine hydrochloride 0.1% is sold as trademark Patanol (or Opatanol in some countries). It should not be used to treat irritation caused by contact lenses. The usual dose for trademark Pataday is 1 drop in each affected eye once a day. The usual dose for trademark Patanol is 1 drop in each affected eye 2 times per day, with 6 to 8 hours between doses. Its side effects may include headaches (7% of occurrence) burning and stinging (5%), dry eye, foreign body sensation, hyperemia, keratitis, lid edema, pruritus, asthenia, cold syndrome, pharyngitis, rhinitis, sinusitis, and taste change.The recommended dose is one drop in each affected eye two times per day at an interval of 6 to 8 hours

Patanol Side Effects

Headaches have been reported at an incidence of 7%. The following adverse experiences have been reported in less than 5% of patients: asthenia, blurred vision, burning or stinging, cold syndrome, dry eye, foreign body sensation, hyperemia, hypersensitivity, keratitis, lid edema, nausea, pharyngitis, pruritus, rhinitis, sinusitis, and taste perversion. Some of these events were similar to the underlying disease being studied.

Patanol Pregnancy

Pregnancy Category C. Olopatadine was found not to be teratogenic in rats and rabbits. However,rats treated at 600 mg/kg/day,or 93,750 times the MROHD and rabbits treated at 400 mg/kg/day, or 62,500 times the MROHD,during organogenesis showed a decrease in live fetuses. There are,however, no adequate and well controlled studies in pregnant women. Because animal studies are not always predictive of human responses,this drug should be used in pregnant women only if the potential benefit to the mother justifies the potential risk to the embryo or fetus.

Patanol Overdose

An overdose of this medication is unlikely to occur. If you do suspect an overdose, call an emergency room or poison control center near you. If the drops have been ingested (taken by mouth), drink plenty of fluid and call an emergency left for advice.

Do not touch the dropper to any surface, including your eyes or hands. The dropper is sterile. If it becomes contaminated, it could cause an infection in your eye. Patanol contains a preservative (benzalkonium chloride), so do not wear contact lenses while applying this medication. Contact lenses can be inserted about 15 minutes after a dose.
